Black bears are omnivores, meaning they eat both meat and plant products. They eat mostly plants, roots, small mammals, insects and lizards. They have a tremendous sense of smell, attracting them to food from even from great distances, and they're more than willing to get into trash cans or camp sites. Black bears are usually afraid of people, but if they lose their fear of people, they sometimes attack. That's why you should never, ever feed a bear.
