El Capitan and Guadalupe Peak are signature landforms in this remote and seldom-visited Chihuahuan Desert region. With no paved scenic roads traveling through the park, the best way to experience its features is afoot, on more than 80 miles of hiking trails. The state's four tallest peaks are protected within Guadalupe's boundaries, along with the most extensive Permian fossil reef in the world.
