This medallion depicts a great kiva, a circular ceremonial space used by the Puebloan people, at Aztec Ruins National Monument in northwestern New Mexico. The ruins, part of Chaco Culture National Historical Park, consist of preserved structures built by the Puebloans, predecessors of today's Pueblo and Hopi Indians, in the 12th and 13th centuries. These pictorial medallions are a unique collectible item that serves as a memento of a new place explored or a new trail traversed. They're made by a master engraver and covered in sturdy color enamel to bring the image to life.
